A unique piece of American coin design . . .
This peculiar $5 coin has a feature most uncommon in numismatic design — the engraving of the Native American who gives the coin its nickname is “incuse”, or sunk below the surface of the coin.
Designer/Engraver Bela Lyon Pratt designed the $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle and this $5 Gold Indian Head Half Eagle using the same sunken/ incused process.
It was minted between 1908 and 1929, when US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt put an end to all gold coin production. and is a favourite of many collectors.
